Portion sizes and pricing swing widely across this group, from a $10 lunch bowl to a multi-course tasting menu at an upscale sushi counter, so checking recent reviews and photos is more useful than the price range alone. In Costa Mesa, dinner reservations for popular izakaya, hot pot and Korean BBQ spots fill up on Friday and Saturday nights, so booking ahead or arriving at opening is worth it. Many restaurants across California run daily lunch specials on weekdays that are not listed on the dinner menu, so it is worth asking. Halal, vegetarian and gluten-free options vary a lot by kitchen; call ahead if you have a dietary restriction rather than assuming the menu will note it.

Costa Mesa is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and Costa Mesa follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

We had dinner here for the first time and it was great! The sushi was fresh, the salmon collar was cooked perfectly. The cheesecake was excellent and not too sweet or heavy. We also loved the panna cotta. Will be back!

Where do I start?! We love sushi. Saw this place along the road as we were riding and stopped to eat. We had no idea how delicious it would be. We had spicy tuna, rainbow and crunch roll, eggplant something, and shishito. Everything fresh. Soul fresh. We also had cheesecake, matcha pudding and lemon sorbet. The best Japanese food. Excited to come back with my sushi-loving friends.

Kappo Sui is owned by pastry chef Zuke, who also seats and waits tables. (Respect.) His demeanor is the definition of accommodating, and the intimate vibe of the restaurant is refreshingly human. Service was exceptionally attentive -- we ordered the crab dumplings, which come as three. Zuke had the kitchen plate four so we could share evenly. Michelin-level front of house service. MONKFISH LIVER: 5/5. Dense and silky richness was perfectly complemented by the bright sauce and fresh onions. SHISHITO PEPPERS: 5/5. The char on these was so good. PORK BELLY: 4/5. The fat was well rendered, the meat could have been silkier. CRAB TOAST: 5/5. Something about Japanese tartar sauce does it for me every time. CRAB DUMPLINGS: 5/5. Surprisingly large, delicate in flavor. SIMMERED KINKI (ROCKFISH): 5/5. Wagyu of the sea, in my opinion. Clean, sweet, and SO fatty. This dish is a rarity on any menu because sourcing is difficult and expensive, and Kappo Sui definitely did it justice. CHAWANMUSHI: 5/5. Absolutely THE softest egg custard I've had to date. It was hard for me to save half for my friend. SUSHI: 5/5. I am 1000% getting the omakase the next time I come here. Everything was fresh

Came in after arriving late-ish at the hotel around the corner, super friendly on the phone, kitchen doesnβt close till 9:45pm which was great for us. Service was incredibly friendly and accommodating. The sushi was excellent, highly recommend getting the sashimi platter to share and order the fresh wasabi alongside it. Ate the rest of the food too quickly to offer pictures. Excellent quality of ingredients, genuinely impressed. Basque cheesecake for dessert was a nice finish. Living in London, coming back will be hard but I hope I get a chance to!

Iβd been wanting to try this spot for so long, and Iβm so glad I finally did! The Agedashi Tofu and Grilled Pacific Saury were perfect with cold sake, and the sushi was so fresh. The Seared Engawa was a standout β honestly one of the best Iβve had outside of Japan. Finished with the matcha pudding, which was the perfect ending. Staff were so kind and welcoming, and even dining alone I felt completely comfortable. Very authentic Japanese food β Iβll definitely be back!
